ResNet Outbound Network Traffic Limits

Effective Monday, January 31st 2005

UNL Information Services and University Housing are working together to provide Residence Hall students with excellent Internet service. To ensure that ResNet's available bandwidth is shared fairly among all students in the Residence Halls, the amount of network traffic each individual sends off-campus via the Internet is limited. The bandwidth quota currently allocates 500 MB (megabytes) to Internet traffic going off-campus for each computer daily. The typical Residence Hall student uses under 5 MB per day.

The bandwidth quota applies only to outbound network traffic, i.e., traffic going to an off-campus destination via the Internet. Network traffic that is directed to campus, such as reading your BIGRED e-mail or using WAM or Blackboard (MyUNL) from your room, will not count towards the bandwidth quota. The bandwidth usage counter resets daily at 5:00 AM. If you exceed the daily allocation, you will be placed into a shared pool with other users who have similarly exceeded the allocation. You will remain in the shared pool until the counter is reset (currently 5:00 AM). You will not be disconnected. The shared pool operates at 5 Mbps (megabits per second).

It is anticipated that most students will not be affected by the bandwidth quota. However, a small number of students will find that their off-campus outbound traffic is noticeably slower at later times of the day. If that is the case, the likely cause is that you have exceeded the permitted quota. Please check below to find more about your personal usage for the current date. If you find that your off-campus outbound traffic is impacted and you are not aware of a reason your computer is exceeding the daily limit, please contact the ResNet staff at 2-3535 or the Help Desk at 2-3970.

If you are using a file sharing application, or any Internet application that allows you to search for and download files from the Internet, this application may be allowing others on the Internet to download your files. All files downloaded from your computer by others on the Internet count against your quota. For example, if you have one 5 MB file and 100 people on the Internet download it, this will use up 500 MB of network bandwidth, which will deplete the current daily allocation.
